adding new AP to network

Hi All,

When I tried to add  new AP 1242 to my network I had following problem:

The Ap was constantly reloading and I was getting message

Wed Mar 20 13:32:12 2013 AP 'UBFT-E06-F0A-R09-0022.901b.a6ba', MAC: 00:23:ab:27:1f:30 disassociated previously due to AP Reset.

%CAPWAP-3-IMAGE_DOWNLOAD_ERR3: capwap_ac_platform.c:782 Refusing image download request from AP - unable to open

image file /mnt/ap_bundle/ap.pri//c1240          

I decidet to reinstall software on WISM 2 modul (7.2.111.3)  this fix the problem and AP joined controller but during this process I have  lost connection to 87 AP for 3 seconds and then they joind back again.

"disassociated previously due to AP Reset"              

i am wondering if this is normal , it does make sence to me.. What do you think

Ho Josef,

What do you mean by "reinstalling" the software on WiSM2?
If you install the OS on the WiSM2 that requires rebooting the machine after installation. right? Have you rebooted the machine?
of course, if the machine is going to be rebooted and there are no other 'backup' controllers, the AP will disassociate for sometime (more of 3 seconds of course).

If you mean that the APs joined another controller and it get disassociated for 3 seconds when it was moving to the new controller, I would say this is practically normal.

I am not sure though about the disassociation message you get. I doubt that is due an AP moves from one WLC to another.

Well if you uploaded the image again to the WLC and rebooted the AP's probably joined and maybe also downloaded the image again and then reset, which is normal. You may of had a bad image on that WiSM to begin with. I have seen this happen on other WLCs when the AP fails to join.

Configuring the 1242 wireless AP

Here are the steps to get wireless AP functioning on network:

1. Connect to power and LAN Ethernet

2. AP obtains IP address from DHCP server. Goto DHCP server and find IP address that it had obtained or else you can configure a static IP address on the AP using the console port, like this:

3. Point your Web browser to the AP.

Notice how both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios show to be "down." On APs with version 12.3(4)JA and above, the wireless radio is disabled by default, and there is no SSID configured. This is for security reasons.

Also, note on the menu selections for the interface that there are options for Express Setup and Express Security. If these are available, why not use them?

4. Click on Express Setup. Notice the changes. Not all of these are required.Change the AP's name, set it to a static IP, changed the SNMP community string, and took the default of "Access Point" for both radios.

Next, click on Apply.You will be redirected to the new IP address of the AP and you had to log in again.

5. Next, click on Express Security and set the SSID, the SSID to be broadcast

6. There are two important things still left to do -- change the admin password and enable the radios. To enable the radios, click in Network Interfaces, on the left.

At the bottom of the page click "Apply."

7. Finally, let's change the admin password so that no one else can get into our AP. To do this click on Security on the left hand side, then Admin Access. From here change the default Authentication password and clicked Apply.

Note that we still have a single global password for all users. You may want to change this so that individual users will have their own passwords.

8. At this point you could see the wireless network from Windows computer and could successfully connect to it using the configured WEP key.

I have seen a bad image be pushed more times over in a multiple ap addition/upgrade situation, However if it was an existing network where it was a single ap addition?

I mean not impossible but i would question it.

When you first connected it or during the boot cycle what were the indicators on the ap doing?

Try just reseting it to factory defaults and then reconnect it.

Allow the wlc to repush the image and see what happens.

Is this the only WLC in the mobility group?  You might be running into the following bug below.  You can resolve this by reinstalling the OS on the WLC then validating the AP images were installed by using the following command

show ap bundle all
