I've installed a Aironet 1200 (AP1231G). The clients are dells using the on board dell true mobile wireless cards. My issue is that when I'm right next to the AP the signal is great, as soon as move 3 or 4 feet away the signal becomes very poor or disconets completely. The AP has slots for a 2.4gHz antenna and a 5gHz antenna, neighter of which is installed. Do I have to order an antenna in order to get better signal strength?

I totally agree with srdja. Your best and cheapest bet is the little black omni-directional (all directions) antenna. You may hear them referred to as little rubber duckies. they will connect to the two posts on your access point for diversity.

To be quite precise.
U will require the AIR-ANT4941 X 2
Which will give u 2.2dbi on each antenna
