Anchor Controller (primary & backup)

Hi Experts,

I have a customer that has an existing 4402 WLC as an anchor controller.     Now the customer will replace the 4402 with 2504 (qty=2; primary and backup).    To my understanding, in the foreign controller, under wlans > mobility anchor, I will add the IP address and mac address of the new 2504 WLC.  it does not show which is primary and backup.  Is there a way to configure which 2504 controller will be primary and backup?

Regards,

No, this is only used for Multicast communication between your WLC & AP, It has no impact on any other unicast traffic or any other settings of your controller.

Hi Rasika/Sandeep,

For the screenshot below, the AP Multicast Mode is normally set to 'unicast'  There is no selection for unicast.

I have already entered the command  config network multicast global disable.

The old 4404 anchor wlc which I will replace with the 2504, the AP Multicast mode is set to  unicast.  Is there a way I can set this to unicast in the 2504?

AP Multicast Mode 1
Multicast Group Address

Regards,

No, 2504 only support multicast in multicast mode

Hi,

You can not change it,

But it will not affect any service if u disable multicast mode;

CLI:

config network multicast global disable

Regards

I wouldn't even worry about that configuration since this is used as a guest anchor. There are settings that vary when you go from an older device to a newer device due to the code. As long as you have the SSID configured properly and mobility is up on both ends, you should be good to go.

add to rasika...

If you dont want to use Multicast:

then:

disable multicast:

CLI:

config network multicast global disable

GUI:

Hi,

The multicast address is used by the controller in order to forward traffic to access points. It is important that it does not match another address in use on your network by other protocols. For example, if you use 224.0.0.251, it breaks mDNS used by some third party applications. It is recommended that the address be on the private range (239.0.0.0-239.255.255.255, which does not include 239.0.0.x and 239.128.0.x.)

If you dont want to use then remove from GUI.

Perhaps you could use a controller which supports HA?

Then you could use the Virtual address as the mobility address for the anchor maybe?

I think the OP wanted to decide what anchor WLC the traffic would be tunneled to and what the backup would be. Like if you had two data centers and one anchor in each data center and you wanted all guest traffic to be tunneled to the primary DC. You can't define which anchor the traffic will be tunneled to as it will be load balanced.
