Hi,
what's the difference between the two cisco products? when to use which one?

Modular has to do with whether or not it has an itegrated A radio or not. The 1242 comes with both the A and B/G radios, where the 1230 only has the B/G, and you can add a cardbus module to have support for the A radio.
