Solved: Re: AP C3700 can't download image from WLC 8500

I have a problem with migration of c3700 AP from WLC 8500 (8.2.170.0) to another 8500 (8.10.190.0). It joins the WLC, but it is stuck in downloading state. Can anyone tell me what is the reason and how to fix it?

Upgrade direct from 8.2.170.0 to 8.10.190.0 is not supported! You need to upgrade to 8.5 first and then upgrade to 8.10.190.0.

You will need to upgrade to 8.5.182.11 first (link below) taking careful note of all the field notices linked below.

Also note 8500 is not a WLC model - it could be either 8510 or 8540 which makes a big difference because they are very different and support different software versions.

If you don't want to have to do the 2 stage upgrade then you can manually download the IOS directly to the APs before migrating them. Check @Leo Laohoo's previous posts for how to do that. You'll need to use the tar file from https://software.cisco.com/download/home/285029865/type/280775090/release/15.3.3-JK10 on a TFTP server where the AP can download the file from. Make sure to disconnect them from the old WLC before doing the download otherwise they'll probably just re-download the old software when connecting back to the old WLC.

FN72524 - During Software Upgrade/Downgrade, Cisco IOS APs Might Remain in Downloading State After December 4, 2022 Due to Certificate Expiration

3700 is listed as supported, you may need to do a mid release as for the 8.10 it only shows you can upgrade from 8.5 and newer. I've never done that big of a jump so can't verify. you could also be hitting the expired MIC, but doesn't look like it. This is that fix.

Situation: The WLC runs fixed software, but some APs cannot join.

Enter the config ap cert-expiry-ignore {mic|ssc} enable command.
If any of the APs that cannot join have not downloaded the fixed software:
1. Disable NTP.
2. Set the clock back to a time before the WLC certificate expired (might keep newer APs from joining).
3. Have all APs join the WLC, download new software, and rejoin.
4. Set the clock to the correct time and re-enable NTP.

@RxTx Saw this log, but it is supported:

@Leo Laohoo Unfortunately, changing the date on WLC to before December 4, 2022 didn't worked.
@Dustin Anderson I already did similar migration once but on different controllers (same versions), so it is possible without upgrading current WLC. Again, unfortunately issuing this command and setting the time did not change anything
