AP distance setup

Leftz

Hi this is an old topic, but recently looks like two AP(c9130 etc) distance can be setup at much bigger than before. For example, first of all, lets suppose no any obstacle in that area such as wall etc, In the past, we did not set AP distance more than 80FT usually based on survey tools for predictive planning such as Ek etc. Now we can setup AP distance at 100FT or even 200FT. Is this because some standard has changed? or something else. Does anyone has experience like this? thanks

  - On what knowledge do you base this assertion , I think site survey remains a determining factor because client population has not changed in terms of (overall) wireless capabilities ,

Are you talking about a point to point link or AP density in a standard deployment?

Agree with @Mark Elsen that not much has changed.  Specific AP radiation patterns may be slightly different and choice of antenna can also make a big difference but the fundamentals remain largely unchanged.

Hi

 Dont forget that the AP is half the equation. The AP may have antenna and power to send signal far away but does the client can reply ?

  Ekahau site survey does not  use the same wireless adapter as your laptops and the site survey measure the signal received and not the signal sent. The AP perspective is not captured on site surveys and it is as much important as the Client perspective.

@Mark Elsen @Rich R I agree with you. I am always doubt the result. but Ek emphasize technology develops. The predictive survey result is based on some standard or criterial to analyse many factors and get final result. In other word, Ek most likely changed the standard or something wrong so that the result is big different with previous

AI AUTO-PLANNER ----> Configure -----> Coverage profile----> High Speed Connectivity ----> close window----> Create

From this config, we can get 100FT or even 200FT ap distance on the diagram

@Flavio Miranda I am talking about predictive survey instead of post one

  Predictive site survey it theorical. It helps , I used a lot  in the past but when it comes to troubleshoot a problem, for example,  it will never replace a walk through site survey.

we are replacing all old APs with new model 9130. so that we need predictive survey to give us referenced ap location and quantity quickly.

I'm not sure what EK sets default ap power values, but I would plan for 25-50mW max. I know a cisco can do 200mW, but most devices are only capable of ~ 25mW. Just because you have a bullhorn and they can hear you 200ft away doesn't mean you can hear them talking normally.

The below is parameters for the configuration. we compare it with the same default one
