hi,

thanks all experts here for providing valuable help.

think i found the ans.

the predownload command i applied during the upgrade was wrong and supposed for flexconnect AP tat why not working.

ap image predownload site-tag siteAAA start .

refer to https://www.ciscolive.com/c/dam/r/ciscolive/global-event/docs/2022/pdf/BRKEWN-2846.pdf; Pg 93 is the correct command for predownload image to APs in different site-tags on the controller.

Once again thanks you.

@Charlie Grey

 Can I see the command

show version | include INSTALL|boot

9800wlc# #sh version | in INSTALL|boot
System image file is "bootflash:packages.conf"
26763263K bytes of eUSB flash at bootflash:.
26763263K bytes of eUSB flash at bootflash-2:.
Installation mode is INSTALL

Do i need to configure a site-filter in order to run "ap image predownload site-tag" command????

 Checking the cisco document, we can read this

"Instructs the primary APs to start image predownload."

I dont believe this method apply to all AP in the site.

We can also see this

"

Note

To check if Flexefficient image upgrade is enabled in the AP, use the show capwap client rcb command on the AP console.

The AP must be prepared in order to receive the image.

Sounds to me that cisco create  this method in order to upgrade Access Points in flexconnect mode in remote sites. In order to reduce link bandwidth and downtime, you can download the image for one or two acces points and they can replicate this to others.

  - To follow-up on any AP activity I recommend you activate syslog for APs too: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/9800/17-15/config-guide/b_wl_17_15_cg/m_syslog_server.html#config-syslog-server-for-an-ap-profile.

  + Issue the CLI command : wireless config validate
  + Have a checkup of the 9800 wlc's configuration using the CLI command show tech wireless
     (not a simple show tech ) and feed the output from that into Wireless Config Analyzer

all my APs are in local mode.

when i run command "ap image predownload site-tag siteAAA start", i got no response back from the wlc and nothing happen.

so to initiate predownload to all AP on a controller w 2 site-tags can only use "ap image predownload" ?

by the way, i got this "ap image predownload site-tag siteAAA start" command from a write out on n+1 hitless roll AP image upgrade on the internet;

@Charlie Grey

AP in local mode, you can use the command "ap image predownload"

The site tags seems to be related to flexconnect scenario.

 You need also to expand the canditade timage first.

check this video from cisco TAC

https://video.cisco.com/detail/video/6341809746112

i also come across controller w multiple site-tags created for the purpose of best practice to load bal the AP.

these ap also in local mode.

so for these cases local mode ap also use the command "ap image predownload" to predowload all ap and no need create site-filter?

I am not familiar with site filter? Are you refering to site tags?

Have you verified that the APs are indeed assigned to the site tags indicated, or are they in the default site tag still?

If they are still in the default site tag, then yes, one way to get the APs in the appropriate site tag is to create a filter so the site tag can get assigned based on the AP name.

thanks .

@Charlie Grey, It's interesting what you have found.  Do you have multiple controller, either in SSO or N+1?
Once I got use to the GUI to perform upgrade and hitless upgrades, I have never looked at using the cli for this anymore.  So when you tried it from the GUI and specified a site-filter and then a site-tag, what actually happens?  The reason I ask, if you only pre download the image to a specific site-tag, then the other ap's excluded from this would have to download the image during the upgrade/downgrade process and would not really be hitless.  Maybe you have experienced something else, so I'm just wondering if you don't want to use the GUI and want to perform this via the cli or maybe just experimenting?

Let look from different point

Make predown for only one AP if it success then

Either site tag is wrong

Or wlc cli not accpet command
