Can we connect broadband connection directly to wlc 2504, If I am not wrong WLC is Layer 2 device & we need L3 device from DHCP point of view.

Does WLC 2504 support PPoE or not?

You can go either way.... it all depends if your broadband modem does dhcp and NAT.  If it doesn't, then you need a layer 3 device to at least perform the NAT.  The controller can do the DHCP if you want, or you can have the broadband modem, switch or layer 3 do that.  You are better off, crating a layer 2 vlan on a switch with no svi and connecting one port of the 2504 to that and the broadband modem to the other port.  This way that layer 2 is isolated from the rest of the network and the controller and modem can pass traffic to each other.

For all practical purposes, no you can not connect a broadband Internet connection directly to the WLC. You typically will have the WLC connected to a switch, the APs into a switch, and your layer 3 device(s) into a switch (unless the switch is acting as your router).

Thank you Matthew.

well, yes you can connect at broadband modem directly to the 2504, depending on your design.

if that broadband is for just guest access, then when you create the interface for the guest, you point it at the port that the broadband modem is connected to.

That being said, no the 2504 doesn't do PPPOE. the modem would need to hold that connection.

I would also have the modem do the DHCP for the guest users, as I have seen some modems that do not allow access if they do not do the DHCP.

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for solution, Yes broadband is only for Guest access.

So can we connect ethernet cable coming from modem to any port of WLC directly or do we need to do any changes in settings of modem or port of WLC?

& then we will have to connect other port of WLC to switch to which AP's will be connected?
