I am trying to configure a Cisco 5508 on my test network. Does the connection from my switch to port 1 on the 5508 need to be a trunk port?
Thanks.

I think the issue is that you are connecting a Gigabit Ethernet port to a fast Ethernet port. The 5508 port are 1gig only and can’t negotiate down to 100mbps.

- Depends on what you mean for port 1 on the 5508 , I would suggest to start with a more broadened overview and or this document :

Thank you for the help. The 5508 has 8 SFP distribution ports. I am connected to distribution port 1 through a SFP cat5 adapter. The adapter is working because when I directly connect a laptop to the SFP cat5 adapter, I get access to the controller. Port 1 is configured with 192.168.5.250. The laptop has an IP of 192.168.5.249. So I am wondering does the connection between my switch and port 1 of the controller need to be a trunk or access. The port on my switch, fa0/22 that is connected to distribution port 1 on the controller is configured as a trunk and I am getting no light, no connection. I tried configuring the switchport fa0/22 as an access port and it did not work.
Thank you.

- Check the switch-logs when the intended connection is made, preferably check connect a serial console to the 5508, and observe for messages on the console too, if any. I think it could be either trunk or access, if no different wlans/vlans are needed for the moment. You may of course toggle and check if that makes any difference.

I am connected to the controller with a console connection as well. I will try what you suggest. Is there a command I need to use to see the logging?
Thank you.

- Not on the controller, the console will log all events. On the switch you usually need show logging.

UPDATE
I connected the 5508 to the gi0/1 interface on the switch module(there's only one), and I'm up and running! I see why you're a hall of famer. Thanks again.
Thank you bro, you really helped me!
