The following is displayed on my access point when I try to join:

*Dec 14 09:52:52.000: %CAPWAP-5-DTLSREQSEND: DTLS connection request sent peer_ip: 10.0.0.2 peer_port: 5246
*Dec 14 09:52:52.207: %CAPWAP-5-DTLSREQSUCC: DTLS connection created sucessfully peer_ip: 10.0.0.2 peer_port: 5246
*Dec 14 09:52:52.211: %CAPWAP-5-SENDJOIN: sending Join Request to 10.0.0.2
*Dec 14 09:52:52.211: %DTLS-5-ALERT: Received WARNING : Close notify alert from 10.0.0.2
*Dec 14 09:52:52.211: %DTLS-5-SEND_ALERT: Send FATAL : Close notify Alert to 10.0.0.2:5246

AP: Product/Model Number : AIR-CAP2602I-E-K9, LWAPP image version 8.5.151.0
CISCO WLC 5520 Series : Software Version : 8.10.162.0

Following log is displayed on the wlc gui:

AP with MAC f8:4f:57:a5:73:60 (AIR-CAP2602I-E-K) is unsupported.

I have ignored the certificates on the wlc with the command: config ap cert-expiry-ignore mic enable

The country code in the wlc is Albania.

Try add image directly to AP

It seem that wlc can not push image to AP

The 2600 series is no longer supported in 8.10.x only up to 8.5.x

Tried that also but it didn't work. Is there a problem with the compatibility maybe?

So I need to either downgrade the wlc software version or change the ap model?

- Yes , those are the only options, however the downgrade is not advised since the aireos controllers are EOL and Cisco no longer giving support it becomes kind of mandatory to use the last release available for a particular model.
Better is to invest in modern APs and look into migrating to the 9800 platform(s) . you can download and deploy the 9800 VM version for free (Cloud version) , for use APs must be licensed. But often it's a good start to only to get a look and feel with it,

Cisco will not allow 2600/3600 to be supported in 8.10.X.X. The last and final AireOS to support 2600/3600 is 8.5.X.X.

The option is to search the used market for 8540/5520/3504. People are dumping them because they are migrating to the 9800.
