Gents just a quick question regarding Cisco AP 1242......which is the recommended IOS for 1242 to make it autonomous AP. Secondly i got the new AP and to my surprise when i open it i cant find any Antenna with it. My question is that will it work without Antenna secondly what antenna should i buy keeping in mind that i will be making it standalone Ap with ADSL router heard that they have different Antennas

So why would cisco sell Ap without antenna this is very starnge as per your say it will not work which is very starnge......
It ain't strange. It's logic. How would Cisco know what antenna you, as a customer, want?
I am setting this AP as autonomus and will hook up with ADSL modem so kindly advise the Antenna's shd i but all four.
I've given you the part numbers and I've given you the document link. It's now your job to choose which one you want. For a single 1240, you would ideally need two 2.4 Ghz and two 5.0 Ghz antenna. You can optionally disable either one of the radios and/or optionally disable Diversity.

huge two story house keeping in mind that Ap will be at ground floor
What are the floors made of? Wood? Concrete?
My recommendation:
1. Install the AP hanging off the ground floor ceiling; or
2. Get two 1240.

My question is that will it work without Antenna
No.
what antenna should i buy
Articulated (AIR-ANT2422SDW-R & AIR-ANT5135D) or non-articulated rubber duck (AIR-ANT2422D or AIR-ANT4941 & AIR-ANT5135DG-R) or rubber duckie (AIR-ANT2422DG-R & AIR-ANT5135SDW-R) antennas would suffice. It all boils down how you install the AP.
Go here.
NOTE: Please do NOT be tempted to get the high-powered "disco sticks" if the AP is going to be used at home.

Ok one last thing............I have checked teh antenna types and it cost $$$$............what would you recommend for a huge two story house keeping in mind that Ap will be at ground floor and current wirless (normal router) signals are very bad at upper story...........how many and which ones
Thanks heaps

2.2 dBi Dipole
AIR-ANT2422DW-R

AIR-ANT2422DG-R

AIR-ANT2422D
This is an articulated (aka bend-able or foldable) antenna.
AIR-ANT2422DG
Non-articulated and rigid.
Both have same power but the AIR-ANT2422DG is newer.

Depends on how you want to install your 1240. If the 1240 is mounted flat on the wall, then AIR-ANT2422DG would be suffice. IF you are able to mount the AP from the ceiling (Cisco logo facing the floor), then you can use the articulated antenna and point the antenna towards the floor.
Just want to let you know the non-articulated antenna comes in one color. The articulated antenna comes in white (AIR-ANT2422DW) and black (AIR-ANT2422DB). Black "blends" well with your 1240.

Yes, it will surely work but keep in mind the placement of the antennas.
