Client to Building, no line of sight to access point?

Does anyone have any experience connecting from a house to an access point or bridge at the office within a mile without line of sight?

Any information on equipment, antennas, and distance would be great, Thanks.

I was going to try an AP on the roof of the office with an omni antenna and directional, yagi's ? connected to the workstations at the houses.

I have a client who installed some antennas on their own and actually put one *inside* the attic of a house. It connects, but the reliability is not what they would like.

If you have a window facing the house or can mount the antenna on the exterior wall and run the coax inside, that would certainly help. 802.11b clients are supposed to go more than a mile, so you're pushing it to do so without LOS.

If you had, say a 19dBi patch at each end (with 3 feet or more of coax to keep the EIRP legit), you would have a System Operating Margin of 32dB, so you could lose 99% and still connect at 11Mbps.

True Line of Sight at 1 mile requires 14 feet clearance above obstacles, so think about just how bad your path is.
