It depends on the AP model you have:
- If it is *very* old (up to 1700, 2700, 3700), it will likely support an autonomous mode.
- If it is newer, you can't configure them without a controller.
- For the 1800/2800/3800 the controller can run on the AP itself. This is named Mobitlity Express
- For 9105/9115/9120/9130 the controller can also run on the AP, but with these newer models it is named Embedded Wireless Controller (EWC)
- For the newest models like 9136, 9162/9164/9166 you are out of luck. You need a dedicated controller, but this can also run on a VM: The 9800-CL.
