I have a 1852i that I would like to manage via a WLC 2504. Is there a procedure to convert the AP?

I know this is late but better than never. Anyway below is your solution.
First way, you can convert your ME image into CAPWAP with command "ap-type CAPWAP" in Privilege mode. Now AP will work as a CAPWAP.
Another way if you are looking to install lightweight image in AP then you may load it via tftp server. Follow below procedure.
Step1. Assign IP address to your AP with command "capwap ap ip <ip address> <subnet mask> <default gateway>
Step2. Check connectivity between tftp server and AP using "ping"
Step3. After successful reachability use command "archive download-sw /reload tftp://<tftp server ip add>/<image file>"
Now image will start to load and will reboot once. Login with default username: Cisco and password: Cisco
Thanks
