Converting 1040N autonomous AP to LWAPP

Hi,

I have a couple of 1040N autonomous APs want to convert to light weight APs.

Please help me to acheive this.

Nsonythomas,

     You should only need to pull the LWAPP/CAPWAP recovery image from cisco.com.  Then you can either use the upgrade tool or the  archive download command to pull and load the software onto the AP.

please note, that if you are running windows 7, you can not use the upgrade tool at this time

Is it also possible to somehow "add" any already existing autonomus APs to a new WLC I'd set up in that specific Network?

Would I be able to feed the lightweight image to the autonomous AP from the WLC?

The WLC doesn't accept autonomous AP's. WCS/NCS/Prime Infrastructure allows you to manage autonomous AP's though. These management tools will also allow you to convert added autonomous APs to lightweight if you want. It doesn't push out configuration templates but it can monitor and keep config inventory of your autonomous AP's.

So how would I need to proceed to get that autonomous AP into the WLC? Do I need to get console cable access to that device to be able to put the lightweight image on it? I'm asking, because this autonomous AP is at almost 8 m height and not easily reachable.

I typically use the archive command

ap#archive download-sw /overwrite tftp:///

OK, cool. So I don't need any other cables than the Ethernet one (which is connected to a PoE switchport), right?

No... You basically telnet or ssh to the autonomous AP and you issue the archive command. This will upload firmware to the AP and that is it. Pretty easy once you get the first one done. Make sure you have option 43 or DNS so the new converted APs can find the WLC or else you can put the APs on the same subnet as the WLC.
