Difference between AP ios image wlc 8540 & WLC Flex 7510

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade the WLC hardware from flex 7510 to wlc 8540. In the currently in flex wlx we have usinh IOS 8.2.130 and all APs 4576 also having the same image. And AP association in WLC is DHCP. We are using DHCP option to AP registration.

Existing WLC 7510 IOS Image 8.2.130 APs counts are 4576

New WLC 8540 IOS image 8.2.130

And in New WLC I have upload the configuration and manually added two aps both are working fine. All existing SSID and its network are publishing currectly.

My Plan is when we change the hardware we will simply change the new hardware IP address so no need to do the DHCP modification so all APs will be report to the new WLC. But my doubt here is WLC 8540 IOS image is same as WLC 7510 or not means both wlc hardware using same IOS image file for APs. Why this point comes in my mind because if APs are looking for registration and presently they are having 7510 wlc IOS image and when they will get new hardware wlc 8540 so they will downloading the new IOS Image.

So i just want to know whether IOS image for APs are same for different hardware or not.

Both WLC are higher end model.

AP image are the same no matter what model controller. Even a 2504 running 8.2.130.0 has the same AP image. You will be fine.

Then I can ask business to less downtime.

Correct. I move AP's around on different controller models with the same code and joins right away and no download.

I did a move just like this recently. But it wasn't as large. We did the same thing changed the ip of the new controller to match the old controller. We didn't have any issues ..

Hi George,

could you please share the process for IP change?

Are we need to change the management IP address on the both primary and seconadry device.? or just change it to primary?
