Does the Access Point only work with other Cisco gear?

Ive been trying to get my new AP521 to work for some time now, but I finally got the idea that it might only work with other Cisco gear.

According to the extremely limited documentation there is from Cisco it seems that you can only assign it an IP adress from an Cisco U500 device, and also you have to use the configuration assistant to configurer it. and it asks for a VLAN number, which as far as I know is a Cisco thing?

Could somebody tell me if am wrong?
