Enabling multicast on standalone mode AP

Hi

I am trying to enable multicast mode on standalone AP.

Products are AIR-CAP1702I-Q-K9 and AIR-CAP2702I-Q-K9.

By the way, the reason I would like to use multicast is to use product called "Hearing hotspot".

It is able to import several channel of audio and output to IP using multicast.

Its manual says how to setup multicast mode with controller.

https://goo.gl/mo4rq7

However, it does not say anything about standalone mode.

I am wondering if it is even possible to use multicast on standalone APs.

I also went through cisco AP's manual and it still say only about when you use with controller.

I am very happy if anyone could share the knowledge of if it is even possible, or succeed.

All I tested so far is physically connect Hearing hotspot thing and Cisco AP (through Layer 3 switch).

It seems  set up for Layer 3 switch is correct. Because, I can see multicast packet at the other side of Hearing hotspot.

However, Cisco AP does not carry the packets properly to the client under the APs.

Thanks

Have a look on this thread

https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11235041/cisco-aironet-1142-ap-multicast

Did you try "no ip igmp snooping" command ? If not test it out & let us know

Thanks for reply

I have tried the "no ip igmp snooping" command as you mentioned.

Even if it worked for some people on the thread you referred.

Probably, it works for 1130 or 1142 series but not on 1702 or 2702 series.

Or maybe some config on L3SW I used for test environment.

So, I will also try to test to do some config on L3SW.

Thanks anyway for your information and if anybody has any idea or any example

that works on similar situation as me, multicast on Cisco AP.

(or maybe who knows it is impossible on standalone mode)

.

By the way, I forgot to mention it did not work.

Also Cisco vendor officially answered me it does not work on standalone mode.

I doubt if it true though.

As per the following guide It can be standalone:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/1700/quick/guide/ap1700getstart.html

For multicast mode config on WLC please refer the following guide(it also has AP) :

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-4/configuration/guides/consolidated/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED_chapter_01011.html

And also could you try the following command

Use this command to display the access point’s IP address, MAC address, priority, and interface state (administratively standalone, active, backup, candidate, or WDS-only). :

show wlccp wds

I got the command from the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/15-3-3/configuration/guide/cg15-3-3/cg15-3-3-chap12-wdsroam-rm.html?bookSearch=true

Thank you for reply.

Can you point out which part of the document tells the standalone mode can use multicast?

I read the document you referred before. However, could not find the part which tells it.

Or specify the config of it?

As I mentioned above, Cisco support answered it is not possible already.

Thanks,

Regard

In the device getting started guide under intro it is mentioned

use ctrl+F(windows) then enter the keyword standalone

Introduction to the Access Point

The 1700 series supports high-performing Spectrum Intelligence which sustains two spatial stream rates over a deployable distance with high reliability when serving clients. The 1700 series provides high reliability and overall wireless performance.

The 1700 series offers dual-band radios (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) with integrated antennas. The access points support full interoperability with leading 802.11ac clients, and support a mixed deployment with other access points and controllers.

The 1700 series access point is available in both controller-based (Unified) and standalone (Autonomous) configurations, and supports:

  • Simultaneous dual-band (2.4-GHz and 5-GHz) radios
  • Integrated antennas (AIR-CAP1702I-x-K9)

Hi

It is not on bridge mode and it should not be bridge mode because of  whole designation.

I know it is on standalone mode and I am not quite sure why the command you specified helps the way to setup standalone/multicast.

I will try to read the page you refereed and find out if there is any way to get it work.

Honestly, I am not even sure if its really the way make it work.

I thought it is simple as that to turn on multicast mode on standalone AP.

As you can do it on with AP under WLC.

The document mention about so deeply about multicast and how packets works

and If I have to understand all about them just for my purpose tho?

I will try though,,

You only need to go through the parts that I have mentioned or what information you need.

For the readers.

I personally concluded it 1702 or 2702 multicast  does not work with standalone mode.

It seems far beyond difficult to get it work as that way, even if it does.

I tried with WLC controller and turn on simple setting and no problem , it is working.

I am curious if someone can try all info on this thread  and get it work.

I do not recommend tho. I already spent so many time for the experiment...

the command is under

Viewing WDS Information part of the guide

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/15-3-3/config...

This is to verify that if your device has a standalone mode not sure about multicast though

In my research I have found out that "Hearing hotspot" requires reliable multicast which in 1700 can be done when AP is in Workgroup Bridge mode.

The config guide to do so is :

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/15-3-3/configuration/guide/cg15-3-3/cg15-3-3-chap19-wgb-standby.html?bookSearch=true

But i doubt that if cisco TAC support has said no then anything can be done
