Faster Upload, Slower Download - Cisco Wireless

ewells1492

Hello

I was strugling with this for some time now, been researching the Internet and reading documentation and white papers.

But still haven't been able to find a solution. I am hoping someone on this great forum may have experienced this and know of a solution. No matter what I have tried, I am still unable to get Download speeds anywhere near Uploads over Wireless. Here is a description of my setup.

Internet Circuit

       Verizon FiOS 1Gigabit

Cisco Switch = 3850 (WS-C3850-24XU)

The Ports on the Switch are configured as follows for the APs: (Connected to Switch via Cat-8 Cabling)

                   description WLAN Access Point
                   switchport access vlan 40
                   switchport mode access
                   end

The Port on the Switch connected to the ASR1002 router as follows: (Connected to Router via 10Gbit fiber)

                  description Port-Channel to ASR 1002F
                  switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,20,30,40,50,60
                  switchport mode trunk
                  channel-group 1 mode active
                  end

The Port on the Switch connected to the 5520 WLC is as follows: (Connected to Switch via 10Gbit fiber)

                  description WLAN 5520 Controller
                  switchport trunk native vlan 20
                  switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,20,30,40,50,60
                  switchport mode trunk

CIsco WLC = 5520 (10Gbit interface)

Cisco AP's =  AIR-AP3802I-B-K9

CIsco Router = Cisco ASR1002

Config files for ASR 1002 Router, 5520 WLC & 3850 Switch attached.

Now.. When I connect a notebook (Wired) directly to the Switch I get correct Upload & Download speeds (approx. 870mbits Down & 880Mbits Upload). But when I connect wirelessly via Notebook (equipped with a Intel Core i9-8950HK processor, 64gb RAM & an Intel AX200 Wireless adapter configured for 5ghz with no other devices as this is the test environment) I get speeds (approx. 300Mbits Download & 880Mbits Upload even though I am directly under the Access point). So it appears the issue is on the WIreless side (As the Wired side is just fine). But I haven't been able to determine if the issue is with the 5520 WLC configuration or the 3850 Switch.

I'm hoping the experts on this forum could help, I'be been trying to figure this out for some time now.

Again, Configs attached

Hi Leo

Interesting, Don't think it's a license issue with the ASR Router as this issue only affects (Wireless) data throughput.

When I connect a device to the switch (Wired). This issue does not happen. get consistent speed throughput of 880mbit or higher both Upload and Download. This only happends on Wireless.

If this is happening only to Wireless, post the switch config of the AP port as well as the output to the command "sh interface <AP PORT> controll".

Hi Leo

Thanks again.

Here is the Switch (AP Port) configs:

SNI510SW001#sh run int te1/0/13

Current configuration : 124 bytes
!
interface TenGigabitEthernet1/0/13
description WLAN Access Point
switchport access vlan 40

end

SNI510SW001#sh run int te1/0/14
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 124 bytes
!
interface TenGigabitEthernet1/0/14
description WLAN Access Point
switchport access vlan 40

end

SNI510SW001#sh run int te1/0/15
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 124 bytes
!
interface TenGigabitEthernet1/0/15

Here is the output from "sh interface <AP PORT> controll".

Thanks for the output.
I don't see anything funny.
The port to the controller doesn't have any Total Output Drops?

This is a long thread... have you done an Iperf test to validate the throughput up/down within the local lan? This helps eliminate if it’s wireless or not. If you have a wired Iperf server on the same vlan as the wireless client that runs as a wireless Iperf client, you should see similar upload and downloads, then there is nothing wrong with your wireless and is your routing. If you see a major difference with Iperf, then yes something is wrong on your wireless infrastructure or wireless device.

Hi Rasika

I hope your well

Just wondering if you may have any additional suggestions and/or information which may help me with this issue.

Thanks again, much appreciated

Cheers

Hi

I did a similar test on my environment. In my case, I got vWLC running on 8.10.121.0 and 9130 AP on flexconnect mode with 80MHz channel width.

(vwlc) >show client detail f8:e4:e3:72:6c:da

Current Rate..................................... m11 ss2

.

Policy Type...................................... WPA2
Authentication Key Management.................... 802.1x
Encryption Cipher................................ CCMP-128 (AES)

.

Radio Signal Strength Indicator............ -37 dBm
Signal to Noise Ratio...................... 62 dB

Since my laptop (ax200 with the same driver version as your client)  connected MCS11, 2SS theoretical data rate I should expect 1.201Gbps (Refer MCS table given below correspond to MCS value 11 under 2 SS and 80MHz channel width/0.8 microsecond guard interval).

http://mcsindex.com/

When I did iperf using TCP port (default)  with my single client on the cell, I got only 449 Mbps/444 Mpbs upload/download respectively.

iperf Done.

Looks good in that case. So I do not think you have any particular issue with your wireless. Pls not that when you have many clients in the cell, you will see much-reduced throughput for individual clients. Right now what you see is the best case scenario

If you are happy with the responses we have given, you can mark thread answered. Else pls let us know any other queries.

Hi Rasika

Thanks again, much appreciated. We will most likely upgrade our older ASR 1002-F Router as well (Just to cover all bases)

We were looking at the ASR 1001-X or the ISR 4451-X (The whitepapers say these routers are capable of up to 2gbit data throughput).

Any suggestion on which would be the better choice ??

Thanks again

Cheers

I would not worry too much about the router if the focus is wireless client throughput. When you add few clients to the cell you will see a drastic drop in throughput for the individual clients. Therefore you will not see more than 1Gbpbs traffic from an AP overall.

I would suggest you test with few clients (at least 10 clients in the cell) & see individual device throughput.

Hi ewells1492,

I have similar issue in my network. May I know if you have found out the root cause and fixed it ? I am using a Catalyst3850XS +WIFI6 CPE. The speedtest by wifi 6 is around 500M download/850M upload. However, the speedtest is fine when I connect the CPE's wired port. After I replaced the C3850xs with other brand switch, the WIFI 6 speed can reach to 800+/800+.

I have no idea what is wrong with Cisco catalyst3850 series switch ? Would you mind to share your solution ?

Thank you.
