Invalid characters in username

I have a client with a Sony VAIO and intel wireless adapter running Win XP. The wireless adapter is configured using the Intel PROset utility.

My WLAN setup is the following:

WiSM v. 4.1.181

ACS v4.1

WLAN: PEAP/WPA/TKIP

When the client tries to authenticate, I see the following log in the ACS server:

"invalid characters in username"

The username field in the ACS log is shows blank. The username for the client is actually very simple. Four letters only, no special characters. But it keeps failing.

If I disable the utility and instead use windows to configure it, it works fine.

Has anybody seen this before?

Thanks

The characters that I know for sure cause the problem are space, <, and >. They can be in any position in the username.
