IP CCTV across PTMP wireless bridges

Can anyone speak about their experience with IP CCTV cameras, and how well they function across a wireless PTMP bridge network?

I have been asked about the feasibility of running several security cameras back to the main network via wireless bridges.

Here's the proposed design:

3 separate parking lots, each with  3+ cameras, all wired back to a PoE switch for each lot.

Each switch connected back to the main network via a wireless bridge, with all 3 bridges connecting to 1 Root Bridge.  Line of sight is fine from each lot, back to the main building.

Attached is a basic drawing.

I know that wireless cameras are an issue due to them being a constant transmitter and occupying the AP's entire duty cycle... Would it be any different for wired IP cameras, or would the bridges in this scenario be just as slammed?

Thanks!

Hi @brettlarkins

Your design is pretty much fine. You dont need to worry about dutty cycle if the camera is wired, only wireless camera could be a problem.

A part from that, just keep in mind that when you run AP on mesh network, there will be some loss in terms of capacity on the Map APs due the link budget. For high definition image transport this may be an issue. But, for regular cameras, I think  you can reach your goal with no problem.

Thank you very much for the reply!  I've proposed the design and solution, so hopefully I will get to work on it soon.

Can you (or someone else) explain why the wired cameras would not be detrimental to the wireless bridges like wireless cameras would be to an AP?  In my mind, it seems like they would almost be the same, since they are both constantly transmitting devices, whether wired or wireless.

Thanks!

The problem about Camera duty cycle is the Channel Utilization. This means that Wireless cameras transmit packets all the time and make the Air interface busy impacting on the cell performance. As you may know, in Wireless network if one device is transmitting, all the rest must sit and wait.

Wired cameras is different as it does not occupy the Air interface thus have no impact on the wireless network.
