We have a remote location with 1 LWAPP AP connecting to a 5508 WLC. We are doing 802.1x auth/wpa2 on 1 SSID for iPads to connect to. Now we want to simply connect a printer to print wireless using AirPrint from the iPads. The problem is how to get the printer connected to the wireless network specifically to the sane SSID? Will the printer need to support 802.1x or have the ability to do certificates? Is there a better way to do this. Thanks for any advice.

You need to see if the printer can do 802.1x or not. The major requirement for bonjour is to have multicast enabled on the WLC and on the network. The easiest way is to place the devices on the same subnet, but if you can't or don't want to, then you need to use a bonjour gateway. Take a look at this document as it will explain what you need for both.

Thanks for the info. Does multicast have to be enabled on the WLC if devices are on the same vlan?
Is the bonjour gateway required only if printing across subnets?
Thanks again.

Yes it does have to be enabled on the WLC and on the network or else it will not work. Bonjour gateway is if your going to require bonjour to go between different L3 subnets.

Thanks. If the printer does not support 802.1x, could we serve up another SSID just for the printer and put the Ap in an AP group with both ssids mapped to the same vlan? This way they would be connected wireless local to each other on the same subnet.

Yes that will work.
