IRCM Firmware Upgrade in 5508 Controller

Hey there,

I have 5508 controller running with 8.5.151.0 with some legacy AP's and now I wanted to migrate to 9800 WLC and new 9120AXI AP's, unfortunately I can't go directly, I have to keep both the setup and to support for seamless roaming (to enable L3 roaming) planned to create a mobility tunnel between AireOS and 9800IOS Controllers.

I read one of the document we have to go with under 8.5IRCM 8.5.182.104 firmware.

Now the question is I have to install both images which is available under 8.5IRCM. (i.e., Cisco Wireless Controller AP Bundle Image for IRCM Deployment base on 8.5MR8 (8.5.182.0) & Cisco Wireless Controller Image for IRCM Deployment base on 8.5MR8 (8.5.182.0)), What happens If I have not installed the AP bundle image.

Your 5508 must be on the IRCM release version.  Here is another doc if you need for reference:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-8/b_c9800_wireless_controller-aireos_ircm_dg.html

For your second question, you need the ap bundle after you upgrade to the IRCM release if your ap's are on that list which requires the bundle or else the ap's will not join the controller.  See this post:

My bad... I replied on the other thread.  Here was my response:

It's a seperate image and you would select code.

Click Download to download the software to the Cisco WLC.

A message indicating the status of the download is displayed.

Note

For Cisco 2504 WLC, Cisco 5508 WLC, and Cisco WiSM2, the Cisco WLC software image is split into two images: the Base Install image and the Supplementary AP Bundle image. Therefore, in order to upgrade, repeat Step 2 through Step 14 to complete the installation of both the Base Install image and the Supplementary AP Bundle image.

Download the Supplementary AP Bundle image only if you are using any of these APs: AP802, AP803, Cisco Aironet 1530 Series AP, Cisco Aironet 1550 Series AP (with 128-MB memory), Cisco Aironet 1570 Series APs, Cisco Aironet 1600 Series APs, or all of these APs.

Note

Ensure that you choose the File Type as Code for both the images.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.!

AP bundle install is same as code install? I mean after installing the base image I have to install AP bundle in the same way by selecting the FileType as code for AP bundle as well.??

Thanks in advance.

No... they are separate.  If you look at the downloads and look at the description and or the filename, you can see it states what the file is for.  So you need to upgrade to the IRCM:
https://software.cisco.com/download/specialrelease/bc334964055fbd9440834f008e5aca34

Then you need to upload the ap bundle after you reboot the controller:
Supplementary AP Bundle Images for Cisco 5508 Series WLC Release 8.5. This bundle is mandatory to support AP802,AP803,AP1530, AP1550 , AP1570 and AP1600.

What is the FileType should I select for AP Bundle, is Code or image from the dropdown list in Download File page??

Should be.  I don't have a 5508 available to me to check.  Maybe screen shot it.

Should be the same way as you download new code.  This section on the guide explains it:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn85mr5.html#upgrade-instructions_85

Same way, but read the release notes also:

@Hemanth Shanthapp do NOT use 8.5.182.104 - use 8.5.182.105 if you want to avoid problems.
