I know the its cisco and i know it is an aironet 700
all i want to do is change the mode to 54.mbps
I dont have the serial number because it is an appartment and the router is locked in the box .. i do not know who the IT were that set it up either... I might be able to get in the box but i would need to find out who was the IT that installed it.. I would be saved a lot of pain if there were some simple way to change the mode without direct access to the router. please help. thanks

Without accessing AP via GUI/CLI, you cannot make any changes.
Here are the reference document related to the AP model you mention.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/wireless/aironet-702i-access-point/model.html
Give it a try to see if it has default username/passwork (Cisco/Cisco)

John, what "mode" do you think you are running right now?
I mean, what you want to achieve or why do you think currently the AP is not configured to use this data rate?
The fact is, an Aironet SAP700 is capable of working on 802.11a or 802.11g, which are the protocols that support up to 54mbps
This AP also support 802.11n in both frequencies with runs at higher data rates/speeds.
However, these APs are enterprise grade APs, and are not plug-and-play like consumer grade stuff.
But as Rasika said, if you know the IP address of the Access Point, try typing this address on the URL of your browser, the default username/password is Cisco, and you might be able to access it and configure it.
Otherwise if you don't know the IP address or password, there is no way to perform any changes to the AP, besides than erasing the entire configuration and configure it from scratch, which I won't recommend if you are not familiar with Cisco IOS and have access to the unit through a console connection.
