LAP1142N-A-K9 will not join WLC2504 controller

I currently have six LAP1142N-A-K9 access points and just purchased an additional access point (same model) to provide coverage in an area of our building. It is connecting to a WLC2504 controller running software version 8.3.143.0 but I cannot get it to join the WLC. I can see it under "Monitor <> Statistics <> AP Join" but the status says "not joined". Additionally, it shows a base radio MAC but the ethernet MAC is all zeros. Can anyone help me solve this?

Just FYI, I know this is older equipment but I work for a small non-profit school and we don't have the budget for the latest and greatest.

Try following from console of non working AP

capwap ap primary-base WLC1 209.165.200.225

If that doesnt work:

clear config and reload

Check out this field notice: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/field-notices/639/fn63942.html

If that doesnt help can you console the AP and post the output of its boot up

Hey Haydn, thanks for replying. I already had the certificate expiration error on my other AP's and got that resolved by upgrading the software on the WLC. I figured since the software was already upgraded and the certificate issue was solved, I should just be able to connect an additional LAP and it would get the updated software pushed to it. Additionally, when I try to connect to the LAP via putty, I get a "connection refused" error. Can you advise any next steps?

Connect via console cable? If that refuses will need to factory reset via mode button and try again

Thanks Haydn. I'm actually waiting on a console cable to come in the mail from Amazon.

I tried the factory reset (I think I did it correctly) by powering off the AP, holding the mode button while plugging power back in and releasing the mode button after a few seconds.

Assuming I did a reset correctly, I still am not able to access the AP via putty or telnet and it still does not join the controller.

Also, I'm still perplexed as to why the Ethernet MAC for the AP shows (in the WLC) all zeros (in the attached screenshot)

Ethernet Mac showing as all zeros is known thing until AP joins WLC

Try following from console of non working AP

capwap ap primary-base WLC1 209.165.200.225

If that doesnt work:

clear config and reload

I'm trying that now. Is there a way to transfer the config file from the working ap to the non-working ap? Would that solve the problem?

AP5057.a84e.6d7f>capwap ap primary-base WLC1 209.165.200.225
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

put config capwap ...

if that doesnt work debug capwap console cli then try

no way to copy the working to non working, they are light weight APs all this is doing is telling it to register to that WLC. the WLC1 has to be the WLC hostname (case sensitive as well)

The AP starting upgrading and is now online and joined in the WLC
