mDNS Timeout for Printer

Hi All,

We have an odd problem with one of our HP Wireless printers. In the past few months it has randomly dropped off the WLC from an mDNS point of view - in the section: Controller > mDNS > Domain names. Reboots would not bring it back on mDNS.

whilst this happens, the printer is still associated with the WLC as a client. However the mDNS service advertisement count becomes 0. It still says it has the default mDNS profile.

We disabled some unused features on the printer (like ipv6 and other unrelated features) and the printer came online, but again dropped off after a week.

Now after being online for a few weeks it has dropped off again and this time strangely a reboot has brought the printer back online from an mDNS point of view. It can be seen in the mDNS domain names list and in the client section has 3 mDNS service advertisements still on the default mDNS profile.

can anyone help to find out why the printer drops off after a few weeks? I suspect there is an mDNS timeout being reached like in step 2 of this document:

How can I view the timeout and set it to not drop off from an mDNS point of view? We need the printer to be online always.

many thanks!

Hi All, anyone that can offer any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi Mike,

I would like to know what WLC/AP hardware/software being in use?

I would check any specific mDNS related issues listed on those release notes applicable to you. If there is an update on the same  main code release, I would try different release if that is an option

Hi Rasika,

Thanks for your response

Our WLC is the 5508 model with software version 8.2.166.0. The APs are AIR-AP2802I-E-K9, software version with 8.2.166.0. I think the latest I can currently go to with our other AP models is 8.5.161.0.

I've checked the bugs list on 8.2.166.0: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn82mr6.html#pgfId-1480431

I don't see anything related to Bonjour/Apple Airprint/mDNS in there.

Do you think this kind of behavior is symptomatic of a bug? I'll see if it's possible to get to 8.5.161 quickly.

Many thanks
