Move AP to new 5520 WLC

DAVID

I have two 5520 controllers both running 8.10.x. Both are maintained by Cisco Prime 3.10. One controller will be replaced by a new one but before I can retire the older controller I need to move the APs off the older controller over to the new controller.

The APs use option 43 to discover the controller.

I need to move the APs from the old controller to the new controller while maintaining current AP names and other settings

The best way is to define the AP HA (high availability) configuration.  This allows you to define a primary, secondary and tertiary controller.  This is the best way and easiest way to move ap's from one controller to another.  I have attached a spreadsheet that I have used for AireOS to move ap's around.  Hope that helps.... test it with one ap first.

8.10.x is rather non-specific!
Make sure you're running the latest TAC recommended releases as per the links below before you start migrations otherwise you might encounter problems due to changes in the CAPWAP protocol in the latest releases of both AireOS and IOS-XE.

you also have option to use built in Cisco Prime template to set new primary secondary and tertiary controller and push the template to APs, you can move with your own flexibility and define a lot more parameters if you want. AP names are stored local to AP so you wont loose AP names during any move process.
