Noob Cisco WAP Firmware question

Hello all,

I am a pretty novice when it comes to wireless. I am doing some health checks for a customers wireless and I am a little confused on the firmware. They have a mix of CAP1620I and AP1815I access points in their environment. On the 1620s, I see the primary software version as well as the IOS version. On the 1815s, I only see the primary version, no IOS version. From my understanding, the primary version they are running is the LWAPP firmware, and the IOS is for standalone/autonomous APs? I am trying to find the recommended firmware for the APs but am a little confused as to which version it should be. When I SSH in to the 1620s and run ‘show version’ I see the two versions. Since they are connected to the WLC, should I only be looking at the LWAPP version? Is the IOS version on there from when they maybe weren’t connected to a WLC?

Thanks!

As per i know - The primary image of the access point is the same as the controller image, the access point reloads and joins the controller.

If you looking to upgrade, you need to Look for the Controller version to Upgrade and make sure the AP is compatible with the code you upgrading.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

1600 and 1800 are totally different platform.  But, the primary version is the version used and IOS version is the basic firmware but no autonomous

Tô decide which version, you need tô use Cisco Wireless Compatibility matriz. Learn tô read that document and you will be fine.

You need to check the compatibility of the versions the WLC and the AP models will support here https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html

As for recommended software version it will depend on the WLC model (AireOS or 9800)

9800: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/catalyst-9800-series-wireless-controllers/214749-tac-recommended-ios-xe-builds-for-wirele.html

AireOS: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/wireless-lan-controller-software/200046-tac-recommended-aireos.html
