Hi we are looking at implementing a Cisco Wireless solution using the Cisco Wireless Control System and Location Appliance. Anyway we want to basically track were our stock is and we were looking at using RFID tags and the above Cisco solution to do this. What we want to check is that are we correct in thinking that with the Cisco setup we would need Active tags and it will not work with Passive ones? Also what tag do you recommend that Aeroscout ones look really expensive. Anyone know of any cheaper ones?

You are absolutely correct. You will need active RFID tags. Here is a useful document on this topic.

Specifically, you need Wi-Fi compliant (2.4GHz) active tags. Active UHF tags cannot be used with Cisco Aironet access points as they are on the 900MHz band, not the 2.4GHz band.

Aeroscout has partnered with Cisco in this area and has a dynamic RFID tag solution. We had a neat demo and will be re-visting this company when we are ready to purchase tags.

Aeroscout tags look good but heres the catch. The tags are cheap (t3 is around 65 bucks), but to program them you need a 1500 dollar device to IP them.

are there any alternatives to Aeroscout?
