>...and now lost access to APs,
- If APs are on POE through switchport you may recover them by shutting and un-shutting the ports they are connected to , because that implies a power cycle ,

what AP Models you have, have you checked the compatability matrix :
what AP models WAP002 and 003 ?
check the release notes :

I've rebooted WLC and now lost access to APs, unable to raise tac case as they have past their end of support date.
I still have access to WLC

Have you tried upgrading via CLI?

As Marce1000 suggested, I bounced the APs from the switch and they came back up with the new image, life is good again.
Thanks all for your help.

You should NOT be using 8.5.171.0!
The only version of 8.5 you should use is 8.5.182.7 - link below.
Refer to field notices below.

@Rich R is correct.
The APs will not be able to complete the automated download due to FN - 72524 - During Software Upgrade/Downgrade, Cisco IOS APs Might Remain in Downloading State After December 4, 2022 Due to Certificate Expiration.
Either upgrade to the fixed version or perform a manual upgrade of the selected APs.
