Our wifi vendor Siemens has a soft client for an iPod/ipad/iPhone device. We are trying to use the iPod on our internal network with the soft client installed. It does work however the users are complaining that the iPod drops off of the wifi while it is sitting idle. Once you unlock the device it connects back to the wifi and works again. Is there some kind of idle timeout that is used on and iOS device that can be altered?

I believe it's got to be an application down-/uploading from the phone.
The objective of this madness is to extend the battery life in case the owner keeps forgeting to turn off the WLAN.

Nope. Apple OS has a 20 minute timer and can't be altered. If there's no activity for 20 minutes, the Apple OS will go to sleep.

Will a periodic ping to the device keep the wifi running or does it need to be a running application?
