My take on the whole thing is it's CIsco's way of standardising its entire range of networking equipment. The engineers who are familiar with Cisco's CLI will be comfortable on AP's as well now. Other then this I do not see any other reason.

Features that were not available with VxWorks are available with IOS. For example: local RADIUS authentication, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).

The only caveat that I found out is that you give up previous troubleshooting tools available on the VxWorks when you go to IOS. Now you need to buy CW WLSE - about 8G.
