WDS for roaming

Hi guys,

In an Wireless Autonomous implementation (without WLC),

do we need to set a WDS (Wireless Domain Services) in order to do seamless roaming even if we do PSK authentication ??

Hi,

With PSK:

if you are using a PSK, then just need to configure both the AP exactly the same way, with the exception of the IP address on the BVI interface.

So long as the ssid and encryption are the same, and there is overlap between the cells the client should roam between the AP.

With 802.1X:

if you are using 802.1x, then you would want to configure WDS for the key caching.

Thanks Sandeep :) my confusion is  if I configure an AP as a WDS and if we are using 802.1x/EAP authebtication , we need it to do a seamless roaming because we need to store our key (PMK) at the WDS level, if we don't the client need's to go to the raduis server and with psk the PMK is the PSK itself and it is configured manually , so no need for WDS ?

1. If you use PSK then you don't need to configure  WDS.

2. If you are planing to use 802.1x then yes you need to configure WDS.
