What is the limitation number of clients (PC or Switch etc) that should be connected on to the wired LAN end of a Wireless network ?
Wired LAN (SWITCH)<------>AP/Bridge <-->Antenna

There is no physical limitation with the AP for this however as all the devices will be in the one broadcast domain standard LAN scaling design limitations apply.

I was told that the maximum number of clients that can be connnected on the Wired LAN end of the AP is 256

The limitation of 256 is DHCP subnet limitation.
However, since they are in the same broadcast domain and using CDMA/CA algorithm that has about 50 percent of overhead, you probably should not support that many clients with 1 AP on the same channel.
