Wifi Network Tester for outdoor Cisco 9124 APs

Hello

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good Wifi Network tester. Next year we will be rolling out about 73 Cisco 9124 AXE Access points and are looking for something to test connectivity, performance, strength. We have a fluke Linkrunner for the LAN connections here in the refinery. Was just wondering what everyone is using and what features you suggest.

Thanks in advance

If you are a Linkrunner user, you probably could have some fun with the NetAlly EtherScope nXG. No, Sadly, I don’t have one …

Oh ok thanks so much. yes I love using the linkrunner. I think I saw something on the NetAlly. Will check it out more. Appreciate it.

What I use is a Cisco WiFi handset, like an 8821 (preferred the 8821 because this model does not roam well), and then roam with the phone with Music on Hold turned on.

If the MoH stops, then guaranteed the call was dropped.

Oh ok thanks, yes thats a good idea. We dont have those but I think I have an app on my Android phone that can help with some basic testing.

No, that is not going to work because Android OS have several apps to "cheat" roaming (improve roaming) and this defeats the purpose.

However, if there is nothing else to use then this method of testing can be used as an indicator.

Remember, calls must be made using WiFi calling.

Since you are using 9124, I assume that you have Catalyst WLC's as well (9124 doesn't support AireOS). Recommendation from Cisco is to use DNA center (if it works) and use Aironet active Sensors to monitor and provide you with wireless network performance.

I would highly recommend EtherScope nXG, even though I like to have it still it's too expensive for me. I prefer the opensource option WLAN Pi for this use case. If you want the RF side performance, best option would be to go with Ekahu.

Oh ok thanks so much. Gonna discuss  more with my boss.
