WiSM2 possible to run on older IOS?

Mats Nilson

Hi.

I need to verify if the new wism2 module will function if it is installed in an IOS 12.2(18)SXF8 environment?

Implementation guide states IOS 12.2(33)SXJ The problem is getting a service window for the 6500 platform, hence I need to know if we can get it working even though the harware support is limited.

What will work - ie if we run the hardware wizard thru serial port - will we have connectivity if we configure the ports manually?

Or is it perhaps not possible at all?

Regards

/Mats Nilson

Yes.  As long as it's 12.2(33)SXJ.

Thanks for your replies.

Didn't think there were any options other than IOS upgrade, but I really needed to verify since we have a administative halt on system changes unless urgent issues.

I needed a firm validation this upgrade is mandatory for wism2.

I'm still curious though - what would have happened if we didn't upgrade IOS?

Would the system have been unable to channel data through the backplane correctly?

The device wont come up!! thats My wild Guess.. havent tried though!!

I agree with Surendra.  If you are running an old IOS and you happen to insert a WiSM-2 the supervisor engine will not be able to identify the new hardware and power down the module and thereby rendering the WiSM-2 as a piece of junk.

Your vendor should've given you the heads up anyway that this hardware requires a new IOS.  Unfortunately the Data Sheet for the WiSM-2 failed to identify what IOS is required.

One more question on this thread.

Since we have now got a go for upgrading the IOS I have a little difficaulties finding if the current IOS will upgrade correctly to the advised version without any loss.

Current version is (s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9_WAN-M), Version 12.2(18)SXF7

In the realease notes for IOS 12.2(33)SXJ I can't find any upgrade matrix or upgrade train.

Will this version upgrade without causing any mishaps on current WiSM(ver.1) and switch config?

Mats

Just got an email from Cisco "Mobility Solutions Marketing" and they've updated the WiSM2 data sheet.  SXJ is now being mentioned.

Not quite the answer I was expecting...

- I need to know if any IOS features or command will be affected when we upgrade the IOS on the sup270?

In the realease notes for IOS 12.2(33)SXJ there is no mention of s/w compability - Have you any inside information on that?

Thank you in advance.

Yes and no.  Yes I got confirmation from TAC when the Data Sheet of the WiSM2 was "clear as mud".

However, here is the confirmation that the WiSM2 will require SXJ IOS.  This link here will take you to the SXJ release notes.  If you also look at the WiSM2 Data Sheet, Cisco has updated this and mentions the SXJ as a miminum required IOS.

Does this answer your question?

Not really.

What I meant in the earlier message was if 12.2(33)SXJ supports an upgrade from 12.2(18)SXF7.

There are some caveats that sounds disturbing (CSCtl76189), but I believe it wouldn't affect us in an scenario where we first upgrade to the new IOS using only the old WiSM, then install the WiSM2 in paralell with the old modules before decomissioning them. (I'd like to make an controlled transfer of ap's to the newer module after it has been tested and verified for operation)

Sinc we must be able to support the older WiSM and the new WiSM2 on the same platform, my concern is not the support of the WiSM2 itself, but how an upgrade from 12.2(18)SXF7 to 12.2(33)SXJ will affect the existing WiSM and if any running configuration on the 6500 will suffer after en upgrade.

What is your opinion - are there any operational risks in this scenario?

Mats,  Where you ever able to run this mode of Wism an WiSM2 at the same time?  We need to do this as well but when we upgrade the IOS code it seems to not support the configuation of ports and port channel for the WiSM after upgrade.  When we try to configure the gig port for the WiSM IOS says the ports are not configurable.  We are going from SXF11 to SXJ2

I am wondering if this is at all possible to run both on the same chassis.

Thanks for any advice.

jcosgrove, I upgraded the IOS on my 6509 yesterday in preparation for the WiSM2 and ran into the same problem you have.  Fortunately, my Cisco SE was on hand and we were able to resolve it fairly quickly.

With the older IOS code, the port and port-channel configuration was done manually.  With the new code, it is done "automatically."  And the new code wipes out the old port configuration.  Three lines of code bought everything back up for me:

wism module 1 controller 1 native-vlan

wism module 1 controller 1 allowed-vlan

wism module 1 controller 1 qos-trust dscp

Change that first number to whatever module number your WiSM is.  And repeat those lines for controller 2.

Check out this YouTube video which goes through installing a WiSM with the newer "automatic" code.  Since you're upgrading your IOS like I did, you won't have to perform all of those steps, but it will help you understand how the newer "automatic" configuration works.

You can run a WiSM and WiSM2 in the same 6500 chassis.
