WLAN Controller / AP Image: Primary & Backup

Not applicable

I've installed version 8.3.121.0 as the primary image. The backup image is 8.0.140.0 (default) (active).

I have pre-downloaded 8.3.121.0 to 102 of my APs that are supported. The image is set as the backup on them.

I have 51 APs that will not support the 8.3.121.0 image.

So, I have set 8.0.140.0 as (default) (active).

WLC config has been saved.

My goal is to maintain the new image on the APs that support it, but not use it until I can get the 51 unsupported APs replaced.

With the controller set: backup image is 8.0.140.0 (default) (active).

and

APs set: Primary SW Version = 8.0.140.0 & Backup SW Version = 8.3.121.0

Will this work, and prevent the new version from being used by either AP or WLC in the event either are rebooted or power cycled?

The APs will use whatever firmware the controller will boot into.

It should be fine with the APs as long as you don't issue the command to swap the image.

Not entirely sure with the WLC though, there is a possibility that it will take the primary image after a reload, although I think the (default) overrules that.

See here for the details about how to choose which image to boot:
