Hello
I am trying to get separate SSID's on a 2405 WLC and learned that you need to use a WLAN ID above 16.
This linked helped a lot
I need a controller that can put SSID's on different AP's only
I am a Cisco guy but learned WiFi Controllers on Ruckus and Aruba. I can separate anything on these controllers. I would like to do the same on Cisco WLC
Please advise on this
Thank you.
Joe

How do you prevent this... You need to not use the default-group and only use created ap groups. When you have a new ap, yes that will go to the default group, but you as the Administrator knows this and should move the ap to a group once joined. If you decide to remove an ap from a group, what you do is add the ap into another group. There is no way to way to delete the default-group as you know, but you need to understand the flow and know what you need to do. It's pretty simple as long as you are not using the default-group.

not sure we understand the requirement, check below guide see if that help you :

Hello Bandi
You blog explains exactly what I am asking. I don't want the SSID's to broadcast in the default-group along with the new AP group.
Makes no sense for this.
As I pointed out in my post you need to have an WLAN ID above 16 in a separate AP Group
Example:
default-group SSID-1 broadcast on 5 AP in this group
Printers-Group SSID Printers I do NOT want these broadcast on the default AND the Printers-Group I want to install two AP with Printers SSID only

The 2504 has that limitation of wlan ID 1-16. You will not be able to use any wlan id's above 16. So that being said, have you looked at creating ap groups to define what ap's will have what ssid? This way you don't use the default group at all and there is no requirement for the wlan id's to be greater than 16. I just looked at my 2504 I have at home and I'm able to have multiple ap groups with different SSID's assigned to different access points.

I am familiar with AP groups and there’s two.
default and my new group
I crwated an ssid. Printers. With an ID of 16
I added the AP to the new group and left the others in the old group.
when I physically remove the AP from new group. Other apps still broadcast SSID printers.
how do you stop thistle

Also, the 5508 doesn't have the limitation of 16 wlan id's. The process is the same however, move aps from one group to another and don't use the default-group.

Ok I think I get it. Other controllers same way. So I need to remove any AP I don’t want broadcasted across all AP. This is the way it files in all SSID’s up to 16. So it would behoove me to create a “holding group”. And put all AP that I don’t want broadcasted and move the explicit SSID and AP to what I DO want broadcasted.

That is correct. That is what ap groups are meant to be used for. Default group is the basic solution for many that just want the SSID everywhere or don't want the burden of having to manage many ap groups.

Thanks for sorting me out
I am very familiar with the flow like this on Ruckus and Aruba except the WLAN GROUPS do not stay under the default-group. You can remove them. When I saw Cisco WLC, I got as far as the groups and even VLAN interfaces, WLAN and AP Groups... however, I couldn't remove them from the default group the way I expected hence those AP's still broadcasting the SSID's across all AP's.
So, Cisco creates the WLAN's in the default-group (on this model 2504) up to 16 hence the limit.
You, then, have to remove any AP(s) out of the default-group including ones that you are not using so it won't broadcast all WLANS.
Create the AP's Groups then associate the WLANS/SSID's to an interface and add the AP's you want in this group.
Rinse and repeat for anything else more than this.
Thank you.

In most standards , i prefer to less SSID in the environment is better, if any one using 16SSID, that will be mess deployment.
as the document provide same direction, use AP groups, that can have SSID only for that groups ?
5 AP put in Group and Boradcast SSID 1
6-10AP put in AP Groups broadcast SSID 2
i feel that is good approach.

I agree I like three at most on an AP or entire lan.
