Is it possible to run a WLC8510 and the vWLC in HA mode?

HA as in Primary/Secondary Controller, yes.  It's possible. 

But HA SSO is NOT permitted.

Is there anything else i need to be aware of, e.g. reduced features in the virtual? Could we backup the configuration on the physical and restore to the virtual?

Has anyone tried this configuration before?

Depends entirely on what features are needed and what firmware the vWLC is running on.  For instance, on 8.4.100.0, features NOT supported on vWLC can be found HERE.

Also on the same firmware, the feature of HA with N+1 in vWLC has been added.
