Hi Guys ,

I'm bit new to Cisco Wireless

I have few concerns to clarify regarding the WLC Mobility and HA

  1. what is the difference between both
  2. if you setup mobility between two controllers by giving MAC address of the controllers does it make HA
  3. Do we need to implement both

Hello @technerd81

They are different concept.

Mobility group is a feature where WLCs on the same group share RF information.

If you have WLC1 with AP1 and WLC2 with AP2 and  if WLC1 and WLC2 are on the same mobility group this means that AP1 and AP2 can share information if they are closer physically. This brings many benefits like keeps those AP in different channels to avoid interference, control power,  Clients can roam from AP1 to AP2, etc.

Now, High Availability is a different feature. This feature gives the WLC the capacity of share AP Database and even Clients Database depends on the HA type. If one WLC crashs, the second WLC take over of all APs and Clients preventing network downtime.

This is the bottom line about this two feature. I recommend farther reading so that you can learn more about details.
