WLC redundancy

Hello,

I am trying to find the best way to set up redundancy for our wireless network. We have 8 controllers at 8 different locations.

I have them all running the same software (8.0.120.0 - ap restraint on going newer).

I was starting to follow this guide - http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wireless-lan-wlan/69639-wlc-failover.html

But will I have issues with different vlans for the same ssid? Or is it when you have different ssid's to the same vlan?

I remember running into an issue with conflicting vlans when trying to set it up before, just forgot the exact issue.

Thanks for all your help.

Kyle

If you have configured your AP with primary & secondary controller information, then when the primary WLC fails , APs go & register to the secondary WLC.

As long as your secondary WLC has  same SSID defined (with different subnet/vlan), your wireless users of location 1 will get IP from location 2 subnet range (during primary WLC is down scenario)

By the way what WLC models you got ? (I assume 5508/2504 are there). Cisco recently announce EoL for many of their existing WLC platforms (refer below for details)

I would suggest you to look at below WLC HA deployment guide and plan ahead your WLC refresh. Go with pair of WLCs  with HA at each location (if it is required to have WLCs at each locations)

We use 2504's

My issue is we have an SSID 1 at location 1 that is not at location 2. But location 2 has an SSID 2 set to a vlan that SSID 1 needs also. Is it possible to have multiple SSID's to one vlan?

Thank you for the links, would like to do HA but not in the budget currently.

Thanks

You can have multiple SSID's mapped to the same vlan if you want. This is not a concern with Cisco AireOS at all.
