Hi Guys,

My switch is unable to boot up, it keep stuck at POST: Thermal Tests : Begin ? I xmodem a new image into the switch but didnt work.

FIXED For me,

What worked for me was removing the stacking module completely while powered off and then trying again.

I have a Cisco C2960X-24PS-L that this happened to after I upgraded the firmware to version 15.2(4)E6 which is the latest recommended firmware as of 10/3/2018.  I updated it, found that the POST fan was at full blast and the switch had all lights on besides the "sys" light which was blinking continuously slowly. 

Pulling the power just rebooted it into the same POST Thermal Fan loop.  As shown above I hooked up a console cable and it got stuck on "POST: Thermal Tests : Begin"

What fixed it for me was removing the whole stacking module itself.  My switch was standalone, but I had migrated it from another stack and so I just left the stacking module inside it.  Not sure if the firmware update harmed the stacking module, but once I powered it off, removed it, and powered back on the POST fan pattern was different, and it booted right up.

The stack module was my problem as well thank you.  I pulled the module the switch booted successfully then I was able to reinsert the module reboot the switch and it now works as expected.

Thanks for this info. I didn't have a stacking module installed but after reading your post I figured what could it hurt. My issue was resolved by adding a stacking module, switch booted right up, saved config, shutdown and removed stacking module. Switch is back to normal.

You guys are awesome, I had this problem and saw the bug, and thought I was going to have to replace the switch.  Sure enough, for whatever reason, putting a stack module in it allowed the switch to boot right up.

Then I unplugged it, removed the stack module, and powered it on.  Came right up - it appears to be all good now.  Thanks for sharing your solutions here.

had the same issue, without stackmodule. the only thing that solved the issue was to plug off the power cable for more than 2 minutes and plug it back. than the switch was booting up corretly.

This halt at POST: Thermal Tests : Begin issue occurred on a 2960X with no stack module, and a quick reload and subsequent power disconnect did not clear the problem.  After reading your suggestion, I disconnected power for five minutes, and the switch booted normally after reconnecting power.  Thanks for the tip!

I used the same method as AAAAMan did above. I walked in network closet but fan was blowing high, consoled in, had no output. I unplugged for about 5 seconds plugged it back, watched the boot up process and saw it stuck at POST: Thermal Tests : Begin. This switch had no stacking module so I unplugged the power cable but this time waited about 10 minutes then plugged it back. The switch then booted up correctly. I think it has something to do with the capacitors needing to dissapate so the bug does not trigger.

Contact Cisco TAC and organize for an RMA -- This is a known design defect of the 2960X.

So glad I found this forum post. Indeed power off for about 20 seconds didn't work. I left it for 5 minutes off and then it was booting fine.

Thanks for the solution guys ! I had to do a combination of your solutions:

1. Turned off the switch and wait for 5~10 minutes

2. Just after turning off, I removed the stack module

3. Turn on without module (5~10 minutes later)

4. Boot is completely okay

5. Save config

6. Turn off switch again, put back stack module

7. Turn on again and no more problems !
