CUIC Export, Can't open .xls files

I have to assume this is a known thing but I can't find any discussion about it.

When I export a report from CUIC 11.6.2 in .xls formt, I can't open the exported file in Excel 2016.

"Excel cannot open the file .... because the file format or extension is not valid."

This is probably because my group policy won't allow me to open .xls files because of security, etc. What's the workaround for this?

Google Docs (Sheets) opened my test file. Then I downloaded it as .xlsx and it worked.

I tried to attach a file I just exported but this website gives me an error quite similar to excel: "The contents of the attachment doesn't match its file type."

Too funny.

Ok. At least you have a workaround now.

Seems like it is some built in macros/malicious software protection in your PC and browser. You can try to archive file with password so any software will not be able to check the content.

Do you have access to change settings in Excel Options/Trust Center? I suspect it's blocking you there. If your GP blocks you from changing this, you're probably stuck with workarounds.

Yeah, unfortunately we can't open up GP due to a tight security setup. The workaround is good enough for a once-a-month report. Thanks!

In case it helps anyone, I found the following workaround worked simplest

  1. change file extension of exported report from .xls to .html
  2. open in a browser
  3. right click "Select All"
  4. Copy
  5. Paste into blank worksheet

Quick and easy.
