802.1x for CP-8945 phones and Microsoft NPS

I'm trying to get my Cisco phones to use a certificate to authenticate on an 802.1x enabled switch port.

I have set up the AD account and exported/imported certs from CUCM.

I have set the imported Cisco root cert as the server cert used in this particular network policy.

The network policy has Microsoft: Smart Card or other certificate configured for authentication.

I'm getting Network Policy and Access Services informational event ID 6273:

Reason Code 22

Reason: The client could not be authenticated because the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) Type cannot be processed by the server.
