Hi everybody
During boot process, cisco ip phone contacts tftp server and downloads its configuration file.
This file contains “base level settings,” including items such as device language, firmware version, call processing server IP addresses, port numbers, and so on.
1) Does the file contain only firmware version number or it contains the whole firmware to be used by cisco ip phone?
2) Why does configuration file contain firmware version what is the purpose?
3))Assuming the above file contains firm version not firmware, what happens if cisco ip phone does not have the firm version specified in configuration file?
thanks and have a great day.

Cisco ip phone gets configuration file from tftp,, it contains the firmware version number ip phone supposed to be using. If ip phone is using some other version, ip phone will contact the tftp and download the suggested version.
Below is the very good you tube video describing the whole process.
