Bricked 7945G

I have a solarwinds tftp server set up with the firmware files to update phones. Other phones update fine so I believe my setup is correct. This particular phone was stuck on the screen updating to 8.5.2. Did the hard reset and now the screen is blank. On the tftp server I can see the phone continuosly doing a get for term45.defaults.loads. It shows completed and then a few minutes later starts all over again. I let it run overnight just in case it was a time issue. Then I was reading that if the phone was V13 it can only use 9.3.1SR so tried that. This phone shows V14 on the back. I unzipped the 9.3.1 files on my tftp server and edited the CME config for the new loads file which in turn sends all the new config files to my tftp server. All those files transfer fine.  Same overnight result using that version. So I then went back to the CME and changed the loads back to 8.5.2 and updated the configs and tried that one again with the same results. I did go and check the configs on the XML files to make sure they were the correct version each time I changed the loads. I would unzip the entire file package each time and overwrite all the existing files so the correct loads file was on the server.to match what I specified in the CME. SInce this phone had come up to the upgrade screen I don't think it is actually bad but can't get it to upload the entire set of files. I cannot get an RMA as it is out of warranty. Any other ideas to get it to upload the files?

Try connecting this phone a good known working port where another 7945 is connected and perform a factory reset after ensuring appropriate files are loaded on the TFTP server. If it still does not work the phone may need to be replaced.

I did have another 7945 I tried that updates fine. Only difference I can see is that phone is a V04 where the bad ones are V14. The two bad phones hung while upgrading the first time. I let them sit for hours but eventually had to power cycle them. My guess is they are now stuck in some unrecoverable state from that partial load.

How was the factory default done?  Using the 12345 "combo" or flash reset with the "1673492850*#" combo?

If using the flash reset the phones will need to plugged in to a steady power source for about 45 minutes.

Hi there,

I think you may need the firmware shown in these notes;

Hardware Updates

The hardware updates improve the compatibility of internal phone components.

The following tables list the updated hardware versions that require this release.

Phone

Hardware Version

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7942

15.0 and higher

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7945

13.0 and higher

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7962

15.0 and higher

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7965

13.0 and higher

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7975

12.0 and higher

Cisco IP Phones 7942, 7962, and 7975 manufactured with hardware versions as mentioned in the table above must run Firmware Release 9.3(1)SR1 or later. The phone firmware does not allow the phone to be downgraded to releases earlier than Release 9.3(1)SR1.

Cisco IP Phones 7945 and 7965 manufactured with hardware versions 13.0 and higher must run Firmware Release 9.3(1)SR3 or later. The phone firmware does not allow the phone to be downgraded to releases earlier than Release 9.3(1)SR3.
