I am wondering if it is possible for our Call Manager 8.6 to be able to register with our SIP provider, or do we need to have CUBE in between them?

You can not use CUCM if your SP requires SIP registration. CUCM supports IP address or the digest authentication. Technically you can have a direct SIP trunk to your SP but using a SBC/CUBE is always recommended solution for various reasons including demarcation, security, interoperability/flexibility etc.
