We are currently running CallManager 7.0(1) on MCS-7845-HL and want to upgrade to CallManager 9.0. Looking at the Supported Servers for Releases of Cisco Unified Communications Manager document, there list lots of server models. Here are some questions:
1) What is the diffrence between the diffrent models (MCS-7816-H3, MCS7816-I3, MCS7845-HL, MCS7845-H1, MCS78280H3, etc)?
2) How do we determine which model to choose?
3) MCS server or UCS (with VMWare)?

MCS "I" servers are IBM servers, "H" are HP. Your best option at this time is to go with Cisco UCS, but my suggestion would be to talk to local GOLD partner to obtain a competitive hardware quote along with free recommendation, as things such as sizing needs to be taken into account. If you decide to go with UCS then the solution will be 100% virtualized on VMWare ESXi 4.1/5.0.

Just to second Chris' statement here: The recommendation will be UCS/VMware from any reputable partner. There are no plans to support MCS hardware beyond the 9.x releases.
