I would like to be able to configure my IP phones to make and receive calls (outside my LAN). What is a cheap and easy way to do this? Add a vonage device, get a SIP trunk? Also would I need to configure my router as a gateway and install CME on it?
Right now my setup is:
WAN Modem ---> Cisco 2811 ---> Switch ---> CUCM 8.6
--->IP Phones

Vonage don't offer any SIP service for end users like that... if you want to play in your lab, get cheaper sip trunk.
Look at these websites

I have looked into that, but for the config part, do I add the SIP config on my router and then add a gateway in CUCM? Also do I need PVDM modules on the router as well? Sorry I am a bit new to VOIP and CUCM.

I got my SIP connection from SIP.US
Yes, you need to prepare your Router be a SIP Gateway first then connect with your CUCM.
Personally I am using for my CME not CUCM and haven't done it before but don't think it will be different.
Look at the below website for full SIP configuration from where you can get what you required for your own as per CUCM requirement.

Would/Could you paste or email a copy of your config with sip.us?

To configure your IP phones for making and receiving calls outside your LAN, consider these options:
Options for Configuration
SIP Trunking:
Connect your phone system to the public network via the internet. Look into providers like SIP.US or Updata for cost-effective solutions.
Vonage Device:
While primarily a VoIP service, check if their SIP trunking options fit your needs, especially if you have a compatible PBX.
Router Configuration:
Configure your router as a gateway by setting up NAT and QoS. If using Cisco, you may need to install Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CME).
IP Phone Setup:
Enter SIP credentials and server info in your IP phone settings, usually accessible via a web interface.
