Cisco 2901 router can i use Ethernet Switch rather then Ethernet Routed-Port for ITSP SIP Connectivity

anilkumar.cisco

Level 4

Hello Team,

I have existing 2901 router.. where both gig interface of the router has been consumed.. Now customer is looking for upgrading there existing E1 PRI connection to SIP.. but we don't have spare interface.. but in stock i have EHWIC-4ESG ( as per data sheet it is Ethernet switch).. not ethernet router port...

My question is whether i can use it or not for ITSP connection.. if yes.. then how?

19 Replies 19

I'm asking the most basic question: How does the SIP server contact the SIP provider?
So far, I haven't receive any sign that there is a route from the inside to the outside.

The SIP provider will give an IP address to us of /30 subnet, which we need to assign on our routable Ethernet port of the router and an SBC IP address.. we need to point SIP traffic on SBC destination via static route source from our L3 interface..

Do u have any other idea for SIP connectivity or any other alternative as per my scenario

Hello Leo,

As per my colleague.. the following scenario work.

keep 2901 as it is.
insert Ethernet module and assign interface vlan/30 interace with ip address given by ITSP SIP provider..
give an static route in router for reaching SIP Server via new Vlan interface..
return traffic will be given by ITSP Sip server provider on new interface vlan .
Kindly advise..

Hello Team,
Today I tried to simulate the scenario..
Customer L3 switch (3560 v2 as L3 switch , IP routing enable)-->>vlan 144 (port F0/2) -- Gig0/0-->> Cisco Voice Gateway (2951)-->> ETHWIC Card installed ( Int vlan 175)- Connected to -- ITSP SIP provider router (Dummy ) with 10.50.175.62/30 IP address.

From the customer network connected to L3 Switch.. is able to ping only 10.50.175.62 but not 10.50.175.61 (ITSP IP address).. Same is from Switch interface as well.. but from the Customer router.. he is able to ping ITSP IP address i.e. 10.50.175.62 .. All routing and static routing is configure..
Just want to reconfirm.. that this is happening because EHWIC card is LAN based.. thus router is not able to do routing on this interface..
below is the device configuration..

Customer L3 switch..

thanks friends..

Best Regards
Anil Singh

It is working now, as reverse route was missing ITSP (router 2) router..

Only challenge is that.. if we are creating Multiple SVI’s on EHWIC-4ESG.. then only on SVI line protocol is up rest are down.. because it is LAN based module.

But I am able to meet my desired result
